about

On The Morphogenetic Fields 4, we delve deeper into the sessions we recorded at Clive Hall’s home studio in the DAT tape era. Clive’s studio had some very impressive (for the day) equipment for live sound manipulation, including an Eventide H910 Harmoniser, and a Powertran MCS1 digital sampling effects unit. Clive used these in very inventive ways, sometimes using an effect to ‘guide’ the performance.

‘Outcomes aren't confined to mixing the available inputs - they can include choosing to affect how people play - eg adding a prominent sub-octave to Adam's plucked violin strings might encourage him to play in a way that took advantage of the much bigger sound he was creating.’ -Clve Hall

On Improvisation 196, Clive also manages to conjure up some sounds that are very like my water machine, using his DX7!

Improvisation 199 was the only session at Clive Hall’s in which I did the mixing. I took full advantage of the opportunity to twiddle the knobs on his gear, while Clive played DX7 and percussion.

Ron Briefel was often missing from the Ealing sessions due to his work commitments, so it’s nice that he was able to make it to the Improvisation 200 session. On this occasion, no one did the mixing, we just set the levels and played. Roger and myself joined Ron in producing some extended vocal sounds.

about

Michael Allen Z. Prime Cork, Ireland

The use of bioactivity translators to amplify the electrical activity of plants and fungi has been central to much of Prime’s work. Through the medium of sound, listeners are able to enter and interact with the transient world of plant reactions.
